Riverside + Swamp in Eastern North Carolina = Water Moccasins or Cotton Mouth snakes. Other types optional. 

There are not a lot, but it wouldn't take a lot of poisonous snake to disturb your day. 

If there are any around, they are most likely to be along the creek bank. So, keep a look out if you are meandering near the water.
